About Our Training Program

Curriculum designed by EMDR Clinician and Author Jamie Marich, Ph.D., LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, RMT

The EMDR Therapy Training for BIPOC Clinicians training is specifically held for clinicians identifying as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and other traditionally underrepresented persons of color (BIPOC). We believe that creating this space for learning is valuable to our community and works to fully realize our commitment to Social Justice by actively promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within trainings, programs, and publications. Special emphasis will be given to resources centering on the experiences and contributions of BIPOC clinicians, clients, and other related professionals.

This training offers the Part I & Part II curriculum normally offered in-person, including all practicum components, in a convenient, online format. The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is known for focusing only on the standard EMDR therapy protocol in our initial trainings, with proper attention paid to dynamics like dissociation and complex trauma, for optimal implementation in clinical settings. The mindfulness-informed and trauma-focused thread that runs through all of our instructional offerings makes implementation of standard EMDR therapy with more complex cases possible from the beginning of your EMDR training experience. In this online format, you will experience an unprecedented opportunity to learn adaptations for telehealth, while still being able to get grounded in how to use EMDR therapy for in-office applications. The training components, when combined with an additional ten hours of required consultation and successful completion of a post-test, meet all requirements for completing an EMDRIA-approved training in EMDR therapy.

Costs, Fees, Logistics & Eligibility

Training fees: Purchase of this training is broken into two payments of $575.00 USD, with the first being due at the time of purchase and the second one month later. If the second payment cannot be processed due to issues with a credit card, you will be unenrolled from the course bundle. Please notify our office at support@instituteforcreativemindfulness.com with any changes. Note that requests for refunds are governed by ICM’s Organizational Policies. Please note: this course is only available as part of a bundle (Part I & Part II). Please scroll down to see our 2022 schedule of trainings and links to our registration pages.

Consultation fees:  The trainee is responsible for arranging and paying for their 10 hours of supplementary consultation.  At the foundational training level you are required to use one of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness consultants to complete your consultation.  Our team members’ fees vary depending on their availability and geographical location.  See the consultation section below for more information.  To complete EMDR therapy training, all consultation hours can be met through group consultations.  You will receive more information on booking consultation at the Part I training.  Teleconferencing is available for trainees and all consultation hours may be completed via teleconferencing.

Spaces for each training are very limited since we have to maintain a low attendee-to-faculty ratio (10:1 for practicum).  Thus, payment is required at the time of registration to confirm your spot.  We will keep a waitlist if the training is closed.  The Institute for Creative Mindfulness will refund any training fees in full if you cancel two weeks prior to the training minus a 5% processing fee.  If you cancel within two weeks of the training, you will be refunded half of your money OR you have the option to apply that balance to a future training with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness.  Only medical documented reasons or family deaths are considered as an exception to this policy.  No-shows are not eligible for a refund.

If you choose to reschedule your training to a later date, we will allow one transfer.  If you are not able to attend the training you rescheduled for, your registration will be forfeited and you will be required to pay an additional registration fee if you wish to continue with a future date.  Rescheduling requests must be made at least two weeks prior to the training.  Any requests for rescheduling with less than two weeks notice will be considered a cancelation and the above policy will apply.

ONLINE trainees will have 12 months to complete both parts of the training and the required consultation.  Exceptions may be granted based on circumstance.  If you do not complete in this time frame specified by EMDRIA, you may be required to complete Part I again before continuing.  When all 10 hours of consultation have been completed, please email verification of your consultation to support@instituteforcreativemindfulness.com

Eligibility to take the training:  (a) Masters or doctoral degree in a clinical mental health-related field (e.g., counseling, marriage & family therapy, social, psychology) required.  Although it is not required, it is strongly preferred that you are in active clinical practice and working with clients; (b) Master’s level students may be permitted to take the course if the Institute for Creative Mindfulness receives a letter of recommendation from a faculty member ahead of time; (c) Medical professionals (e.g. nurses, physicians) may also be eligible to take the course if they possess a clinical master’s or doctorate degree and if their primary specialty is within mental health.  In these three specialty scenarios, prior approval is required from the Institute for Creative Mindfulness; (d) Chemical dependency professionals with a master’s degree or higher may also be eligible to take the course.  Pastoral/Christian counselors, art/music/dance therapists may also be eligible if they can show sufficient clinical content on their Master’s level transcripts.  In these three specialty scenarios, prior approval is required from the Institute for Creative Mindfulness.

Continuing Education:Continuing education credits offered for each training course may vary by each event.  Please click the informational link next to each event listed on our Schedule & Registration page for more information about Continuing Education Approvals. Please also note that APA approved sponsors are accepted by many state boards, such as California BBS and major licensure boards in the state of Pennsylvania.  You are responsible for filling out any pre- or post- approval forms in your state of licensure and with your board of licensure that may consider APA credits toward your continuing education.

The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is an EMDRIA-Approved provider to serve clinicians in the United States and Canada, only with certain limited exceptions. If you are a clinician living outside of the United States or Canada, we suggest that you contact the Institute for Creative Mindfulness first or check with your regional organization (e.g., EMDR Europe, EMDR Asia, EMDR Australia). A U.S.-based training may not be accepted for formal accreditation in your country. Online trainees have ONE YEAR (12 months) from the time that you begin this training and in-person trainees have TWO YEARS (24 months) to complete all of the requirements, including the 10 hours of supplementary consultation that are required for you to receive your Certificate of Training in EMDR Therapy from the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. We structure our program so that you are able to work with any of our ICM approved consultants or consultants in training for your consultation hours to supplement the online training. Our consultants represent a wide range of specialties at a variety of price points. In the spirit of ICM's mission, emphasizing trauma-focused care and tailoring the most effective program for our individual trainees, we believe the choice of consultant is important to the overall learning experience. Depending on which consultant and format that you select, you can spend from $200.00-$1000.00 additionally for consultation. Please follow the hyperlink that we provided in this bullet point to get a sense of our consultants' expertise and price points before registering. Online trainees have ONE YEAR (12 months) from the time that you begin this training to complete all of the requirements, including the 10 hours of supplementary consultation that are required for you to receive your Certificate of Training in EMDR Therapy from the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. Exceptions can be granted only in extreme circumstances (e.g., a humanitarian crisis, illness or injury).
    • Professionalism: You will show up on time and be fully present for each session, acting in a professional manner. You will reach out to your faculty member or any assistants if any unexpected problems arise. You agree to take full responsibility for addressing your needs in the area of grounding and self-care during the training. You agree to refrain from all alcohol and illicit drug use during the training and agree to speak with your faculty member or any assistant if you anticipate that your impairment due to prescribed medications might pose a problem during the training. The faculty and staff reserve the right to remove trainees at any time if the trainee creates an unsafe or unprofessional environment for you or for other trainees, or for any other reason, at their sole discretion.
    • Accommodations: The Institute for Creative Mindfulness follows the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We ask that if you are in need of any special accommodations that will allow you to take your training with us online, please email us with any special requests thirty days before the scheduled training. If, during the training, a need for an accommodation arises, you are expected to contact your instructor and/or practicum assistant immediately and we will discuss the best possible solution.
    • Confidentiality: There is no client relationship or other privilege that would create a duty rising to the level of clinical confidentiality in this training setting; however, you are expected to respect the confidentiality of other trainees in the group, and your trainer will explain the importance of confidentiality. Trainees who observe a problem with another trainee are expected to bring the problem to the lead trainer or other training staff. Similarly, if a staff member observes an issue with professionalism, they reserve the right to discuss that issue with the lead trainer.
    • Preparedness for Doing Your Own Work: Throughout the training, you will be expected to participate in a working practicum experience in the role of therapist, client, and observer. This means that you will be expected to do a small piece of your own, authentic clinical work. If you are currently in counseling or being treated for a mental health condition, it is recommended that you speak with your provider, alerting them that you are participating in the training. If you have received a major mental health diagnosis (past or present), you acknowledge that you are taking this training and engaging in this practicum at your own risk, and agree to alert faculty or training staff before or during the training if any complications arise. You acknowledge that everyone taking part in the practicum experience is new to EMDR therapy and agree to keep the space as safe as possible for all involved. If any problems arise, you agree to address them with faculty or staff members.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you offer scholarships or payment plans for your training program?

The Institute for Creative Mindfulness offers a Diversity & Social Justice Scholarship.  For more information and to apply, click here

  • Why do Institute for Creative Mindfulness trainings have different prices?

The Institute for Creative Mindfulness works to keep our prices as low as possible; the EMDR Therapy Training for BIPOC Clinicians training is offered at a lower cost in the attempt to not only acknowledge but actively respond to the impacts of systemic oppression as it relates to wage and income disparity.

  • Who is invited to participate in the EMDR Therapy Training for BIPOC Clinicians?

The EMDR Therapy Training for BIPOC Clinicians is specifically held for clinicians identifying as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian and other traditionally underrepresented persons of color (BIPOC). We believe that creating this space for learning is valuable to our community and works to fully realize our commitment to Social Justice by actively promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within trainings, programs, and publications.

This training will integrate mindfulness practices specifically aimed at addressing ethnic and race-based stressors and trauma. We are committed to highlighting the contributions of BIPOC practitioners in the fields of mindfulness and trauma treatment.

If you are not a member of the BIPOC community, we respectfully invite you to participate in one of the many other EMDR Trainings provided by the amazing Institute for Creative Mindfulness team.  To explore all Institute for Creative Mindfulness training offerings, please follow this link.

  • Is this training program inclusive of all identities within the BIPOC Community?

We strive to offer a space for trainees to openly discuss and explore individual attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviors.  We are committed to ongoing cultural humility and the affirmation of all individuals.  We believe in a healing-centered approach to working with all individuals. Services are available to each participant regardless of gender identity, gender expression, national origin, class, ability status, natal sex, military status, spiritual practice, marital status, sexual orientation or citizenship status. Following training, Lisa will share resources for specific private consultation groups that may be of interest to you.  If you are interested in a training offered specifically for  Spanish-speaking, or Arabic-speaking clinicians, please visit the master ICM schedule here. For information about the organizational values of ICM, please visit here.

  • I am interested in EMDR therapy but I’m not sure that it’s for me. Is there somewhere I can listen to Dr. Jamie first to learn a little more about it and see if her training style is for me?

Listen to this COMPLIMENTARY teleseminar recording on EMDR Therapy with Dr. Jamie hosted by our friends at The Breathe Network. You can access the recording by clicking HERE. The Breathe Network also conducted an interview with Dr. Jamie about EMDR which you can access by clicking HERE.

  • Will I be able to do EMDR therapy with my clients after Part I?

Yes, with certain clients. Your trainer and small group facilitators will help you determine which clients will be the best fit for starting EMDR Therapy. It is a common misconception that you aren’t able to use EMDR until the whole training is completed

  • Is finishing training in EMDR therapy the same as being certified?

No. You will receive a Certificate of EMDR Therapy Training after successful completion of Parts I & II and your required consultation. At that point, you may refer to yourself as “fully trained in EMDR Therapy.” If you complete only Part I, you may cite that you have “partial training” or “some training” in EMDR Therapy. Many competent EMDR therapists practice EMDR Therapy with only the Certificate of EMDR Therapy training. This is completely acceptable and generally ethical. In our view, the best ethical safeguard is to make sure that some of your continuing education for the rest of your career is directly connected to EMDR Therapy if you’re going to continue to use it. After completion of our Training Program in EMDR Therapy, you are eligible to begin the optional process for applying to be a Certified EMDR Therapist through the EMDR International Association. For more information on that process, click HERE.

  • I registered and then something came up: Am I eligible for a refund?

If you need to cancel and we receive your cancellation in writing (email is fine) 2 weeks prior to the training, you are eligible for a full refund less a $25.00 administrative processing fee. If you no-show, you are not eligible for a refund of any kind unless documentation of medical or similar emergencies can be provided within one week after the training ends. In the case of inclement weather, should we cancel the training, your registration would simply be moved to our reschedule date. If the reschedule date isn’t available for you we can offer you another date or entertain your request for a refund.  If you decide to cancel your trip due to weather and we are still having the training, the best we can offer is to move your training registration to the next available training. All other situations handled on a case-by-case basis.

Cancellation between two weeks and one week of the training merits a half refund. All refunds, full and partial, are subject to a $25.00 administrative fee. If you terminate your training or need to leave it early for any reason, you are not eligible for a refund. Attendance at the entire training is required for our program to remain compliant with EMDRIA standards. Please see us with any questions on this policy or for questions about how you can make up missed segments of the training.

New policy as of August 28, 2022:

  • I took a Part I EMDR training with another provider. Can I finish Part II with your program?

We evaluate these situations on a case by case basis. Generally the answer is yes as long as you can provide verification of your EMDRIA Approved Part I training with the other provider. We do ask you to complete all 10 of your consultation hours with an ICM Network EMDRIA Approved Consultant, including 4-6 of those hours before your Part II training as a refresher and so that you can get acquainted with our training program and style.

  • If I take Part I in your program can I finish Part II and consultation in another approved program?

This would be the decision of the other program in question. We cannot make any guarantees.

  • Can I complete my supplementary consultation requirement with any EMDRIA-approved consultant?

No. During your foundational training we require that you complete your supplementary consultation with one of our approved consultants on the Institute for Creative Mindfulness team.

  • Do I have to complete consultation between Part 1 & Part 2 or can it wait until both trainings are over?

We recommend that you take 4-6 hours of consultation (available in groups or individually) between your Part 1 & 2 training to ensure getting the most out of the Part 2. If for some reason you are not able to complete any consultation between Part 1 & Part 2 you are still allowed to take the Part 2, there will be more catch-up work to be completed afterwards and you may not receive full benefit from the Part 2 training.

  • What do I need to do if I didn't complete my Part I, Part II and 10 hours of supplemental consultation within the 12 month period?

As of January 1, 2023, trainees have ONE YEAR (12 months) from the time that they begin this training to complete all of the requirements, including the 10 hours of supplementary consultation that are required for you to receive your Certificate of Training in EMDR Therapy from the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. Exceptions can be granted only in extreme circumstances (e.g., a humanitarian crisis, illness or injury). If participants do not complete the required sections in this time frame specified by EMDRIA, they are required to complete Part I and Part II again before continuing. If you began your Part I training before January 1, 2023, the rules that were posted at the time you began your training apply to the completion deadline.

  • Do you offer continuing education credits?

EMDR Therapy training is approved for 21 continuing education credits per part.  Please see the Schedule and registration page for which CE credits apply to your training.  For more information on continuing education approvals, please click HERE.

  • Do you offer your training in other languages?

The Institute for Creative Mindfulness offers training in Spanish and Arabic.  To find a specific training, please visit the ICM master schedule here.

  • What do you suggest that I do in preparation for the training?

If you are interested in getting some preliminary reading done before the training, we’ve prepared a guideline to the books we recommend as part of our training, including notes on when best to read each resources. There are several that are useful for you to read in preparation for the training and others that you will be able to best comprehend after the various phases of your training. Click HERE to access the list.

As of August 1, 2015, The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is listed as a provider of EMDR Therapy Trainings by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).  You can view our listing on the EMDRIA website as an official training provider by clicking here.  Completion of our full training program is a first step in eligibility toward becoming a Certified EMDR Therapist through EMDRIA.  Read further to learn more about EMDR therapy training and the overall process.
